1.Koichi Fujita (Aoyama Gakuin University), “Choice of Education, Marriage and Employment by Bangladeshi Women: Based on Analysis of Microdata of 2016-17 BBS Labour Force Survey”
Abstract
Based on Microdata of BBS’s 2016-17 Labour Force Survey, this presentation is the first outcome of such endeavors. Major conclusions are; 1) After completing the Secondary Education, many women start to look for their husband and be married, which is the major obstacle for them to go for higher education, 2) It seems that there is a dual labour market structure for women in Bangladesh. For women who stopped study until Secondary School, mainly low-income and unstable jobs are available, and in contrast, for women who completed Higher Secondary Education and/or Tertiary Education, high-income and stable jobs are available (although limited). As a result, although many women go to Secondary Education and obtain SSC title, in urban area, many women do not work outside and concentrate in household matters. In rural areas, in addition to household works, many women are engaged in agricultural works.
2.Koichi Fujita (Aoyama Gakuin University), “Reality of Recent Agricultural Employment by Bangladeshi Women: Based on Analysis of Microdata of 2016-17 BBS Labour Force Survey”
Abstract
Second outcome from the analysis of Microdata of BBS’s 2016-17 Labour Force Survey. The presentation will disclose the realities of recent women’s engagement in agriculture. There are mainly two points. 1) In terms of educational background, who are the major women engaging in agriculture, and to what extent, their employment in agriculture is underemployed (especially, in livestock sector). 2) After 2010s, we can observe a revolutionary phenomenon in rural Bangladesh: Muslim women started to engage in agricultural works in the field, beyond homestead areas. The presentation will discuss about where in Bangladesh such revolutionary phenomena are observed and why.
