Purpose

At the beginning of the twentieth century, with the advance of colonial expansion by Western European powers, large numbers of people of Indian origin migrated to East Africa, forming Indian communities across the region. India and Africa have long shared an intricately intertwined history—brought into sharp relief, for example, by the 1972 expulsion of Indians from Uganda. However, Indianists have not paid sufficient attention to Africa, nor have Africanists adequately engaged with India.
This workshop aims to shed light, from an interdisciplinary perspective, on how the Indian diaspora—situated within India, Africa, and the United Kingdom and linked by the histories and memories of the former British Empire—has negotiated with various local actors, including “Indians,” Africans, and Britons, to create its own forms of the social: from formal systems of social welfare to informal networks of interpersonal care. Focusing in particular on cultures of care, we seek to illuminate how these distinctive social worlds have taken shape.
